The new 12-sided one pound coin comes into play today, replacing the original which has been in circulation since 1983. If you’re anything like us, this means one thing: an excuse to spend and get rid of all the old’uns before they go out of service. Okay, we’ve actually got six months, since the original pound coin will no longer be legal from October 15th 2017, but that gives us the equivalent of 24 weeks to spend, spend, spend, right?! Right. On top of this, the old £5 note goes out of service as of May 5th, which means even more reason to shop. We’re excited just talking about it.
To help you out then, we’ve scoured the high street for the best buys under £5, so you can put your notes and pound coins to good use.

Let’s start with fashion. Of course, there’s jewellery including earrings and rings and accessories from fishnet socks to belts and hairbands to choose from, but we’ve even found bags and tops for less than a fiver to snap up. Primark’s ruffle clutch bag will go with everything in your wardrobe, while their striped tee is a capsule classic. As for Boohoo’s sunglasses, just four of your pound coins will get you something so similar to Dior’s cult ‘So Real’ shades that even we couldn’t tell the difference.
And beauty? Put it this way: you could bag yourself a whole new make-up bag if you wanted. Sanctuary Spa’s charcoal mask will totally rejuvenate your complexion, while The Ordinary’s salicylic acid is a spot miracle worker.
