"Feminism is about giving women choice"

Emma Watson has spoken out following the backlash she received in response to her shoot for Vanity Fair.

In case you’ve missed the whole debacle, people branded the actress a ‘bad feminist’ and ‘hypocrite’ for her cleavage-baring outfit. Watson, who is a woman’s right campaigner and pioneer of the HeForShe campaign, faced harsh criticism claiming she’d betrayed her feminist ideals.

Now, the Harry Potter star has responded. Speaking to the BBC as part of The Beauty And The Beast press tour, the star made her feelings clear.

“It just always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is about what feminism is,” she said.

“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.I’m confused. Most people are confused. No, I’m just always just quietly stunned,” the actress continued.

When the reporter asked her to clarify what she was talking about, Watson responded: “They were saying that I couldn’t be a feminist and… and I have boobs.”

The image, shot by acclaimed fashion photographer Tim Walker, showed Watson in a white crocheted Burberry cape with nothing underneath.

“We’d been doing so many crazy things on that shoot but it felt incredibly artistic and I’ve been so creatively involved and engaged with Tim and I’m so thrilled about how interesting and beautiful the photographs were,” Watson explained.
